Meg, We don't have a policy that directly addresses this issue, but here are some options.
If the problem of unauthorized visits to classes is with someone who is not an employee or student of the university, it would fall under our policy on Use and Assignment of University Facilities (IV.B.1)<http://www.purdue.edu/policies/facilities-safety/ivb1.html>. Under definitions, Restricted Areas are defined as "University Facilities where official University activities are carried out and which are not open public fora (e.g. offices, classrooms, laboratories, workplaces)", so the faculty member could request that the individual leave on that basis. If the individual attending is an employee or student, they would need to either be registered as a student or as an auditor of the class (see our academic regulation on Classes<http://www.purdue.edu/studentregulations/regulations_procedures/classes.html>, item B for auditing). As for napping in common areas, we have students who do that anywhere they can. As long as they are in a public area and aren't blocking access to something or otherwise endangering themselves or others, they can nap. The same would be said for an employee. If it became a problem with a particular employee, HR could help their supervisor address the issue (e.g., professionalism). Hope that helps. How about as it pertains to employees when they are off the clock and choose to hang around to be found sleeping (& snoring) in common reception areas (academic & administrative)? Yeah - we have had some bizarre stuff going on lately.... Thanks!
