I found it daunting at first but I got a book and a few basics got me going..I cant
claim to be a zen master in the program but its not impossible to get a certain
ability in..
the version you have wont be a big factor in getting to learn it..usually just gives
you more effects options, the interface stays the same..maybe join an AE group when
you get it..

I have AE 6.0 (don't ask me how I get it). It looks very complicated. I assumed 6.5
will be better?

Doing that well is a lot easier in After Effects...I know this doesnt answer your
question but it looks like you will buying AE at some time considering waht types of
things you want to do..

How can I do a similar thing but reverse from normal motion, slow down the frame
rate.. until it freezes?

    Freeze Frame.

I use the Frame Hold option to do this. Set your clip the way you want
it (the moving part). Now highlight the clip and copy it. Paste one
copy after and one copy before it.

Now right-click and set the Video Option for Frame Hold. Set the first
clip to In Point and the last one to Out Point. Just remember to not
change the in or out points if you resize those clips!

This technique saves me from image capture or creating additional files.
