Subject: Re: [AP] Video For Internet - need help with compression

oic. as i know divX was so great because of its compression. it hacked
from MPEG4 from microsoft. cmiiw. unfortunately, mpeg 4 from microsoft
must be installed too. like real player and quictime, we should
install first. cmiiw.

----Unfortunately it's a "built-in" advantage because Windows Media is
the default format on the "default" operating system on the planet.
The "other" operating system (Apple) uses the same approach, as
QuickTime is the default format on all Apples.
Real Player got in there merely by marketing gusto and sheer
determination, and because it is probably the best in terms of content
control and protection. Unfortunately it also means that the viewer has
the least amount of control over how they watch Real media content..try
using their "Theater Mode" full screen extension and see if the video
ever REALLY goes full screen.
If you get lucky and manage to get a full screen, it is likely to take a
whack at your display settings on the way out. For folks who are content
to watch their streams in whatever image size is predetermined by the
provider, it's great....RealPlayer requires almost no user intervention.
But Real Player is viewed as almost spyware by a lot of anti-spyware
programs due to the fact that it likes to share user information with
third party entities, and Real Player also likes to "inform" users of
"events and alerts" (translation: it will spam you to death)
While we're on the subject, let's be sure to give props to FLASH MEDIA,
because they deserve it. You don't even need a PLAYER at ALL to watch
flash media, just the Flash plug-in enabled in your internet browser!
That deserves a BIG hats off and Flash files often look ten times better
than ALL the other formats COMBINED. The down side is that whatever size
it was published as, that's the size it will be on your screen. There is
little to no user control over things like screen size, rewind, fast
forward or anything else unless it is specifically embedded in the flash
content in the first place. But still, for captivating content, a Flash
enabled site is hard to beat, because the user only has to get TO the
website and the flash media can load and start playing with NO user
input or anything WHAT----SO----EVER.
So basically what you have is something like the telephone company,
where Microsnot is Ma Bell and Apple is GTE (now called Verizon), back
in the old days when the phone company controlled everything...
On the one hand, it's good because the default players DO work and work
rather well, but on the other hand, if you want superior performance
like you would get from DivX or MPEG-4 you need to have "superior" users
and the fact is, most users don't know and don't CARE what the file
format is that they're watching.
So, it boils down to a situation where a format like DivX is great for
the "power user" and there will obviously be more of them as time goes
by, so it's always good to OFFER a DivX format if you think your files
will be viewed by lots of those types of people, but always be sure to
provide the two "default" or "OEM" formats for the folks who have just
barely mastered the concept of clicking on a link to watch a
stream...those are the majority and you probably have fifteen seconds of
their attention before they just give up and move on to the next big
thing.
