It's called LightScribe

http://www.lightscribe.com/about.aspx

Several hardware manufacturers (e.g. HP) already licended the technology. You
will need to buy a special type DVD that is made for lightscribe. The review
that I read, it's like 45 min printing something on the DVD surface using this
technology

I saw an ad in a flyer to day with cd that your laser burns the label on
after you flip them over. Not sure if you need a special burner or just
the software to do it!
Seems like a good alternative!
