Interesting but, not quite surround. The thing is that when you shift the
sound in this technique you basically transition all of it. The whole point
of 5.1 is separating out dialog to middle channel. Music front left and
right, FX left and right rear an LFE to the sub woofer.
Yes you can shift things from speaker to speaker. This is just the template.
The problem is that in the process provided on that link you shift
everything. It's rather weird sounding to say the least.
So you get more of a double stereo effect or I guess since you're taking
down the volume in certain tracks you move the field over. Now it all
depends on your source.
I would need to know what your source material was to see if it's even worth
you going crazy trying this convoluted process. Remember you get no .1 or FX
placement in that process and with 5.1 being more standard the listener has
some basic expectations of where things will come from. Especially dialogue.
