That was my understanding as well.

At least until my camera's firewire I/O died and I tried finding replacements.

At first, I thought it was simply because the COMPUTER didn't recognize the 
devices, but when it recognized Sony deck (but Premiere couldn't capture from 
it -- no hardware profile), I tried using WMM, figuring as you did -- once it's 
an AVI, who cares WHERE it came from.

Still crashed.  8(

Now I wonder if there's an issue with my FW card...

Boy, if I don't we're all hurtin'!  2+ G micro, about 2G of RAM and a few 
hundred G of hard drive dpace.
