I am also running PPro 1.5 with SP2 and regularly edit large files and projects. Everything works perfectly fine for me.
I think it's definitely worth the upgrade. I especially like the ability to copy and paste clips between Premiere and AE, and also the ability to create "Project-ready Photoshop Files" in just a couple clicks.
