Jean, it's my impression from working with DVD-R for a few years now that
the motive behind creating separate audio and video files in the
compression operation is to be able to take advantage of dolby digital
stereo audio in the DVD. I create two streams from Premiere 6.5, using the
Canopus Procoder Express plug in (which I prefer to Main Concept for
MPEG2). When I import the m2v file into MyDVD 5.2, it automatically finds
the matching wav file, combines it with the video and then transcodes the
wav to AC-3, if I remember correctly. The only reason I can imagine that a
m2v file might have better visual quality than a program stream (single
video/audio file) is that the compressor would limit the data rate for
video to fit the larger wav format into the final file. This would occur in
material longer than an hour, where size begins to affect data rate in
order to get it all onto a 4.37 GB disk. They say 4.7 GB but they won't
take that much without some sort of shoehorn software.

I have Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5, and the only type of file I can export from
the list in media encoder is a regular mpeg2file. It is saved as an MPG
file, and then I use Nero to author my DVD. That's been working okay, except
that I heard (and maybe this is not correct) that an m2v file is better
quality, so I tried exporting from media encoder using MPEG DVD setting.
That saved the project as two files--one m2v and a wma. None of my dvd
authoring programs will recognize the m2v file. I have Nero 6 Ultra, Easy
Media Creator 7, and Click to DVD (Sony's program).
So I upgraded my Nero Ultra to version 7 Ultra because it says it can do m2v
files. Well, it does import the m2v, but it will not accept the audio file!
Is there something I'm doing wrong or don't any of these authoring programs
take anything except regular MPEG-2 files?
I really don't want to have to buy yet another authoring program.
Thanks for any input and advice.
