Think of an .iso file as a "snapshot" of the data on a DVD or CD. It's not in
folder format, like your would see when exploring a DVD disc on your desktop.
Rather, it's a binary file of 1s and 0s, just as if you had lifted it off the
back of a DVD/CD disc.

A poor analogy I often use is a vinyl record-- when played through a turntable,
the needle turns the wax grooves into music. Similarly, when your computer
looks at a DVD disc, it turns the binary 1s and 0s into folders and files-- but
in reality, on the disc, they are (laser) grooves.

Does that make sense? The advantage of an .iso file is that you can create it,
and it's a uniform standard, so anybody with a capable DVD burner can burn the
file. So you can put it on an external hard drive, take it to a friend's house,
and they can burn the .iso file even though they have a different computer.
