Good conversation here on this thread about our evolving industry.

I didn't just wake up one morning and decide to go buy an Axio system!
Inspired by what I saw at NAB 2005, it looked like HD had matured to a
point of reliability, and knowing that development would continue
(including processing and disk I/O systems), I didn't want to buy in at
some point in the early phase, only to get left in the dust a year
later. Matrox Axio had been in development for several years and at NAB
2005, Axio seemed to be the only reliable "legacy" long-term scalable
solution that could/would evolve and mature...and keep up with changes
in computing power.

There were other 'lower-cost' solutions evolving then too, but each had
some huge "gotcha" built in such as no export to tape, no native HDV
editing....or maybe HDV editing but with huge render times. Axio sounded
good because it offered full uncompressed, native DVCProHD, Matrox
MPEG-2 I-frame (proprietary Axio codec) and now has native HDV and soon
native MXF support. In these cases, "native" means real-time,
full-speed, full-functionalilty with no "gotchas".

The thing about the industry now is we have choices. Buy an HDV camera
and settle in to RT.X2, or a step higher and you can have AxioLE, or a
little bit more and you have AxioHD which basically can do it all in the
same kind of real-time that today's top SD editors have. It's driven by
your customer base, the market you're in, the type of camera or
equipment you have.

I'm in a college environment so I wrote a grant after returning from NAB
2005. I'm now at the end of that funding process and just today received
the Panasonic HVX200 that I was so wowed by at NAB2005 and again at
NAB2006.

Now if the HD delivery systems (Blu-Ray, HD DVD, holographic?) would
just hurry and catch up!

But regarding RT.X2, I'd be willing to bet that for anyone who says
"it's too expensive," if you looked deeper, you'd find that there's
features other systems at the same price point don't have. That's been
my experience with Matrox.

>Innovative and fresh!!? In one year's time, the AxioUtils software has
gone from 1.0 to 1.5 to 2.0 and 2.5 is currently in beta. Each version
has brought major functionality to the Axio workflow, proving that once
the hardware is in place, evolution can continue. Current beta has
support for new things such as MXF file support for Panasonic P2 and
Sony XDCAM cameras. Native RT HDV editing came in 2.0.

EXCELLENT points! As an industry we are in the process of eveolving form
DV
/ Standard Def to HDV/ P2 Hi-Def.

In order to maintain the kind of workflows we've grown accustom to with
DV
footage, we're going to have to rely on 3rd party acceleration.

For Adobe Premeire Pro no other company has or does or will in the near
future come close to Matrox for support, features & performance.
