Well, after reading what I wrote below about "bitter experience telling me
that programs don't just go nuts," I decided that, having more or less
eliminated the impossible, whatever was left must be the truth: and so I dug
into the effects control and timeline and by golly, there it was: a key
frame. Right at the point where the effect "went nuts."

Now that I've discovered my self-made problem :-) I might as well try to
analyze it and learn something out of it. I'm wondering: I thought I had
disabled keyframes. But somehow I hadn't. So am I wrong in thinking that
keyframes, even if they're there, can be disabled?

Also, the mystery remains for me at least: I thought key frames created a
gradual effect. But at exactly that point, the PIP flips instantly.

Finally, an interesting point about how this came about in the first place:
Since the rendering of the PIP effect on my computer takes over 24 hours, I
wanted to make sure I had it right before launching it. So I put 4 photos on
4 tracks to test it out first. When I had confirmed that it was correct, I
used Copy / Paste Attributes to transfer the effect. And this is what
happened: suppose the photo clip lasted 5 seconds, and the destination clip
lasted longer. When I pasted the attributes, a key frame would appear at 5
seconds in the longer clip. Whereas I would have expected it to transfer the
entire effect to the entire clip. And so what happened was clearly that this
key frame stayed in there without me noticing it. So now I'm wondering,
was/is it possible to transfer the entire effect from one to another,
avoiding this keyframe insertion phenomenon?

In any case, I hope this discussion of my little problem might help somebody
else sometime.

John
