One thing to check: Premiere won't capture in a format that differs from the current project's format. If your project is set to HDV resolution and your HDV camcorder is set to deliver DV over the Firewire, then Premiere will not recognize the camcorder, even though it sees the camcorder hooked up to the computer. Likewise if your project is set to DV resolution and your HDV camcorder is set to deliver HDV Premiere won't recognize the camcorder.
The fix is easy: make sure your camcorder delivery resolution matches your project resolution then reconnect the camcorder. In my Sony A1U the menu item that sets delivery resolution is named "i.LINK CONV" and lives in the Standard Set controls. If you turn i.LINK CONV off your camera delivers HDV video. If you turn it on your camera down converts and delivers DV video. Note that if you change the resolution while the camcorder's hooked up to the computer you must unplug the camcorder and plug it back in again for the computer to recognize the computer in its new resolution. My guess is that the camcorder sends its identity and resolution when it's first plugged into the computer. If you change the resolution while it's still plugged in the computer knows nothing about the new resolution.
