Jon,

Listen through your clip... you may find a few seconds of silence in 
there that you can copy & paste to the beginning & end of your clips 
audio.  I'll do this quite often when I have some interview footage 
that I want to start mid sentance.  I'll cut the clip to start on the 
exact word I want, and then paste some room tone in front of it.  A 
good idea is to record about a minute of your room/environment sounds 
before you actually start shooting.  This way you will have some clean 
ambience to paste wherever you need it.
