I own one HDV camcorder, the Sony HVR-A1U, and have been looking at
others. I've also been trying to figure out just what HDV means these
days, what Premiere Pro accommodates, and what might be coming down
the road in the future. I have a few questions if anyone would be
interested in helping me nail them down:
I understand how interlace video works: one field in a frame draws
odd lines, the other field in a frame draws even lines. Why is it
used, though? I can understand how it reduces bandwidth if it runs at
the same frame rate as progressive. But Premiere Pro shows it running
at double the speed: 59.94 frames per second for interlace instead of
29.97 frames usually used for progressive. That means that each
interlaced field has half as many pixels as a progressive frame that
draws all lines. But interlaced fields occur twice as often as
progressive frames, so what's the benefit?
The fact that HDV on my camcorder runs at 29.97 fps makes me think
that somehow HDV is tied to the archaic old NTSC standard. Are there
PAL and NTSC versions of HDV? If so, how all are they different? If
not, are there any differences between European and U.S. HDV
camcorders in high-def recording? (I understand there has to be some
differences between them for down-converted video that goes to NTSC
or PAL output.)
I greatly appreciate any answers or pointers to web sites with answers.
Thanks,
Mike Boom
