Are they fresh tapes or are they being reused? This may be a red herring,
but it's something I imagine could be a cause.

Same tape in the Canon camera did the same thing.

Another tape in the Sony deck captured fine.

I'll assume there is a problem on the tape. This is the second tape it has 
done this on though.

Still perplexed...
