Years back when I was editing on Windoz95/98 I have found it easiest to edit 
with uncompressed video or near-loss-less like MJPEG.
It takes computer power to UNcompress video on the fly. It also takes A LOT 
of hard drive space which is why we have codecs.
I think on the whole, the less compressed the video the better... and the 
better the video will look.
