I'd contact Canopus and see if they have anything like
a runtime or playback only software version of their
codec that can be used by other editing software for
transcoding to another codec or format.

Why I thought of that is because Media 100 has that
for Mac and Windows. (And it was a free download
without having to register or give them any info!)
I've used the Windows version to edit and convert
uncompressed M100 .mov files from a Macintosh to MPEG2
using AP on Windows.

If Canopus has no software only solution, even for
$$$, then you may be stuck with buying at least a
basic Edius setup. :P (And on your next project making
certain everyone will be able to work with the same
video files before starting it.)
