I take a lot of shots in theatres, and have observed one or two points, by
bitter experience. :-(

'Follow Spots' are a PITA. To be avoided if possible. If they're not just
right, instead of lighting your subject, they will 'white it out'.

Red spot lighting is also a menace to modern camcorders. The sensors don't like
it and usually get it wrong.

Both of these things will screw auto-focus.

The best thing to do is to use two cameras at different angles to the subject,
and with luck, you might get one good clip from them.
Set exposure and focus by hand, just as you would for zoom. Be vigilant and be
prepared to constantly change settings throughout the shoot.
Don't turn your back for even a second. Someone will score, and someone will
change the lighting in that brief period and you'll miss the vital 'scoop'.

Regards,

Alan.

Watch your light and colors closely; my company shot in an indoor
soccer rink a few months ago (and during the winter it is a hockey
rink), and the overhead lighting was exceptionally dim and flat.

We spent a very long time setting up our shots because of the poor
lighting, although you are lucky because the white of the ice will
create a bounce that we simply did not have. If you can get in early
enough to check out some of your shots on an external monitor, do it!
