If you use that PC for Internet, it's a very good idea to 'nuke and pave'. If
you don't, wiping it and reformatting is a great way to start clean with all
the latest hardware drivers and installing only the software you actually use.
Upgrading software or installing then uninstalling software tends to leave
things behind, files no longer needed and extra entries in the Registry.
One way to save a lot of time is Autopatcher from autopatcher.com It's a smal
download, which you use to select the version of Windows (and/or Office) you
want to download all the current updates for. Once that's done, burn the folder
to a CD and run it to install the updates and other things like Adobe Reader.
If you apply Service Pack 3 to XP, it's best to go to SP1 or SP2 first. SP3 can
be installed on XP "Gold" (the original release) but there's a few things SP3
will not install unless SP1 or SP2 have already been installed.
Once you're all done installing, install Crap Cleaner from ccleaner.com This
freeware program will delete all the temp files, superfluous Registry entries,
hotfix installers (fixing the Registry so Automatic Updates won't download them
again) and various other things to clean up. The Registry scan should be run as
many times as needed until it finds nothing to get rid of.
If it will be online, get Spybot Search and Destroy (recently released a new
version) for malware protection and Avast! Home edition for Antivirus. Avast!
has non-free versions with more (supposedly useful) features, but the freeware
version does a very good job. I used to recommend Grisoft AVG but they went to
a bloatware 'do everything' program with version 8. (Thus making it suck nearly
as bad as Symantec/Norton.)
