Donald. Not an absolute need, but 5 drives is desirable.
The separate scratch drive is particularly important as it allows AP to 'put and take' exclusively whenever it needs to and not use a drive that's already in use for another purpose. It makes a significant difference to rendering speed. 4 drives would work if it helps to keep the power requirement and the cost down. 1 for the OS and programs. 2 in RAID stripe for storage and other stuff for AP and swapdisc and 1 for AP scratch.
