Hi Guys,
Having joined your group only three days ago I do not know how often the
topic of what computer to get has come up.
I guess quite a few times.
Donald, I will not comment on your specification in detail but agree
with Alan to /go for the best your wallet can stand.
/What to get obviously depends largely on what you want to do. Some
people easily get carried away thinking that unless they have the
absolutely best they can not do anything at all.
I started editing with a P2 computer long before digital cameras. My
first editing software was Premiere 4.2. I wonder how many of you still
know it. My first HDD had a capacity of 4Gb. The video was captured via
a Miro DC30 capture card with massive compression. During capturing you
virtually had to stop breathing to avoid dropping frames. 32Mb memory
was considered out of this world.
BUT - I was able to make videos much better than with analogue editing
suites, even though the computer crashed or hung up a few times during
the day.
What am I trying to tell you? Well, get the best you can afford but be
careful with the so-called "would be nice" things which usually cost a
lot of money.
I bet you will NOT notice a difference between HDDs with 8 or 16Mb cache.
Just as important as the actual hardware you get is the configuration of
your computer. I have seen many super computers not performing at all as
a result of bad configuration.

And remember, whatever you get today will be an old hat in 6 months anyway.

Enjoy

Uwe
