What I did:
I started fooling around with my camera and uploaded the videos to my site.
Lots of people noticed (20 000 downloads in under twenty days, and this was
before youtube) and the ball started rolling.
I did some production assistant jobs on tv-shows and mentioned from time to
time that I used to edit. People took notice and now I edit as a living.

Some general tips:
- I've earned enough money to buy myself some time by converting old movies
and such. I've got equipment to convert from Hi8, Super8 and a bunch of
other formats.
- Offer professional (if that is what you do) editing of home movies. People
pay to see their material edited professionally.
- Contact your local tv-station and ask for freelance work
- Film PUBLIC sporting events, wear your logo and your contact info on your
back. Sell dvds of the event.

I've done all of the above, and that is how I've gotten ahead. And all I do
is a part of a master plan:)

Feel free to ask for more details, but please, be specific.
