Yes Lee, I would now also strongly recommend to finish your projects 
before
changing but one only finds out these things when it is too late.

When Premiere CS5 converts a CS4 project it makes a copy with a different
name (xxxxx_1) and the original project is still available.
When I realized the new project would not work I re-installed CS4 but my old
projects would also no longer work there - and that I find strange. My 
computer
knowledge is rather limited but I don't understand why the change from
Win7 32bit to 64bit would cause that.
I then re-installed CS4 in XP and the old projects still work there.
I am a strong believer in having a dual boot system with two different 
Windows.
This got me out of trouble many times in the past.
If I did not have the two Windows I would have had to re-install the 
previous
Windows just to be able to finish the projects, and that would have kept 
me off
the street for some time (ha,ha).
