Tim, in case this helps, here's a tutorial I wrote a few years back on using alpha channels to bring images into Premiere:
http://www.guerrilla-productions.org/Tutorials/?p=21 It is my understanding that quite a few different apps use alpha channels (which totally rock), but if you have Photoshop, then you can simply import the PSD file and tell premiere which layer to use.
