Its called compression and efficiency. Think about it, a 1 hour SD DV tape is still 1 hour on HDV.
I've also found that HD takes less time to render than an equivalent SD movie The minimum spec for playing HD I've found is a dual core 2GHz, anything less and it does exactly as you have found.
