Mike,

The best is to stick with firewire and get a card.
Surely one of the three computers your friend got will have a spare slot.

Premiere will also not capture via USB and you would need a program that 
does,
don't know which one.

You can get firewire to USB adapters but I know people had problems with 
them.
It looks like certain adapters only work for specific cameras.
