But useless for a laptop with no ExpressCard or other expansion slot, or a
desktop with all its expansion slots full.

If you're going to have to spend more money to connect a camera with firewire,
investigate which will be the least expensive item to replace.

1 Laptop(s) with firewire built in or an ExpressCard slot to add firewire.

2 Digital video camera with USB and compatible with the media the video is
recorded on.

or

3 Buy a cheap desktop with a large hard drive and firewire on the motherboard -
just for copying from the camera.

Do the laptops have USB 3.0? If there's such a device that enables connecting a
firewire device to a USB 3.0 port, that should work decently because USB 3.0 is
faster than Firewire.

Connecting a Firewire device to a USB 2.0 port is going to be iffy because even
though the raw data speed is faster, the actual throughput of USB 2.0 is slower
than Firewire 400. If the Firewire device cannot step down to a slower speed it
ain't gonna work.
