I'm little puzzled by 'The life of the archives are have nothing to do with
updates to the original files. ' stmt. pls explain..
How do i know which ones to checkout and will i be able to restore if i ever
need to ?

Since you can checkout any volume there is no reason you can't keep archives
offsite.
The life of the archives are have nothing to do with updates to the original

If files are never updated, are they still active forever regardless of
policies..
