I was able to install it on Debian 2.2 (kernel 2.2.19, libc6 2.1.3-18). The
only problem I had was obsolete libstdc++2.9 but creation of adequately
named link to libstdc++2.10 gave result. And I was forced to use --nodeps
option of rpm just because rpm cannot look at dpkg database.
What can be read on TSM 4.2 linux86 client:

o Backup/Archive client
The backup/archive client requires the following software
in order to run:
Linux kernel 2.2.x (for x=13 or higher)
or
Linux kernel 2.4.x (for x=0 or higher)
glibc 2.1.x, 2.2 (for x=2 or higher)
libstdc++ 2.9.x (for x=0 or higher)
X Windows System X11R6 (for end user GUI only)
RPM 3.0.x or 4.0 (for x=0 or higher)
Note: Please note that X Windows System X11R6 is a requirement to
install the client. If it is not installed and you do not plan to
use the end user GUI you have to add the --nodeps option of rpm to
disable the check for requirements.
Linux distributions that fulfill these requirements include:
Red Hat 7.0, 7.1
SUSE 7.0, 7.1
Turbo Linux 6.0
Caldera Linux 2.4
Note: The client was certified by Tivoli for these distributions.
Please verify for other distributions that the software requirements
listed above are fulfilled.
