There is a way to do this without buying a product. But, it is a long involved process and requires a separate system to perform the backups. The issue goes much deeper. The operating system involved must provide ways to flush buffers and be able to dynamically dismount/mount file systems. Windows does not yet have that capability. XP was supposed to have some of it, but it is not clear that it will. The ESS products do just that.
