Your salesman is correct. From licensing perspective it does not matter is the license for TSM server or for a client - it is a processor. >From technical point of view it is quite different - a drive/autoloader/library (whatever storage device) can be managed only by TSM server. Even a storage agent needs the server to mount a tape for it. So the answer to the main question is "No, you can attach the drive only to a TSM server". However you can make to system with the drive a TSM server and this wouldn't affect your licenses. It will only complicate your infrastructure. The best way is to gather all drives from different boxes, connect them to single system and use that system as TSM server. This would allow you to benefit from multiple drives on all TSM clients.

our salesman told me that is not important whether it is a server or a
client.. only the CPU number affects the price
but he could be wrong
