Are you by any chance using "memoryefficientbackup yes"? If so, that may slow you down quite substantially. Would be nice to see output from "dsmc query systeminfo" command (make sure to use the same node name as your scheduled events).
Yesterday you said you were going to use cron to get QUERY SESSION data every few minutes... a good idea. What did that show? Also, check what other server processes may be running at the time the backups are running. Is your server overloaded?
