The label lenght can be changed. There is an option on the 3584 Specialist Web Interface to change to 6 char volser reporting.
However, you may not want to do that. If I understand your setup, you have LTO2 tapes with 6 char in old library. New 3584 only has LTO3 drives. You want to move old tapes to new library and migrate data fcrom LTO2 to LTO3 tapes? Leave 8 char on library. New LTO3 tapes will be 8 char(Best practices goin gfdorward is to use 8 char as is simpler for TSM and others to distinguish tapes/drives. If you have AIX platform for TSM, the Atape driver for LTO3 adds an option to SMIT. In Devices, change/show characteristics for the Library Medium Changer, there is an option, something like "Enable 6 char volser reporting for LTO1/LTO2 tapes". There is probably some similar parameter for other platforms. So this allows 3584 and LTO3 tapes to stay at 8 char, but older LTO1/2 tapes will be 6 char. I have had all 3 drives and tape classes in my 3584 in ONE Logical Library and it works. Try a few tapes of each type and see. David B. The reason I ask is that we are migrating from an HP 712e(lto2) library which has the label length set to 6 and were planning on putting the LTO2 tapes from this library into the 3584 library which has LTO3 drives. If I cant change this them I'm going to have to run the librarys side by side until all the data is migrated.
