Since there isn't a perfect solution for backing up VMs, you can choose from one of several options.
a) Treat your VMs as physical servers, TSM client per server. b) VCB incremental backup integration with TSM. The major drawback here is it doesn't grab Windows System State. c) VCB full image backups to a local repository, sweep this location with TSM client on a schedule or by script. d) Vizioncore makes a great backup product called vRanger Professional. It's fairly inexpensive and supports differential backups of full VM images. However, if you're in a TSM environment, your SLA probably dictates backups must go off to tape as some point, so might as well use option c? Also keep mind, you can do a combination of these options. From a licensing perspective, it costs the same to run VCB and/or install TSM client per VM. For DR purposes, I've had tremendous success with option A in terms of recoverability success and performance (time to restore). Because it's a virtual environment, to restore all you need at a DR site is a VM template with the correct OS build and TSM client. Clone this template out for as many servers as you plan to recover, click restore and wait for the tapes to spin up. - Chris -----Original Message----- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Remco Post Sent: Saturday, November 15, 2008 4:03 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] Quality alternative to VMware's Virtual Consolidated Backup?
