Reading through the thread an am surprised at the number of people with problems. We backup about 2,000 windows servers from 2000 - 2008r2 and the system state backup (or one of the other names it goes by) rarely fail.
We backup the system to allow a quicker restore of the system, without it the applications would have to be re-installed.
