On the first problem you've mentioned - the editor on the screenshot is in
"minimized" state. The expected behavior is for editor to get into that
state when you click the minimize button in the top-right corner of the
editor.

What happens if you restore the editor by clicking the button above the
crossed-out button on your screenshot? Does the editor revert to the
minimized state eventually?

Note that you may also restore default window layout by selecting "Window"
-> "Reset Perspective..." from the main menu.
