There is a big difference in font rendering between the Apple JVM and the Oracle JVM when it comes to Swing.
The Apple JVM does subpixel font AA via Quartz, while Oracle does greyscale AA. It may not be as noticeable on retina-MBPs, but the lack of sub-pixel AA is very ugly for non-retina displays.
