The functionality you are trying to build is also available as an application block from microsoft called the Updater Application Block for .NET.
I would suggest you take a look at that first, it will save you quite a bit of code. The client doesn't need to be connected to the server all the time either. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnbda/html/ updater.asp -----Original Message----- From: Unmoderated discussion of advanced .NET topics. This application is subject to changes. So I have a central server where the latest version is available. Now, What I want is whenever the new version of application is available the desktop application should prompt the user to install the latest version of the application. I want to achieve this using Smart Client. But If I am not mistaken in Smart Client, the client has to be connected to the Central Server always. My requirement is that If the connection to the central server is available, the application should check for the latest version. If the connection to the central server is not available then it should continue with the same version. The desktop application should not stop if the connection to the central server is not available. I have achieved this functionality by manually making a version file at the client machine and checking if there is any version update available on the central server. However I would achieve the same functionality by SMART CLIENT. Any clues on it, if yes, please mail me a solution.
