The Updater Application Block and No Touch Deployment are available now to do what you're asking, and ClickOnce is coming in Whidbey. In general these are client-pull approaches that reference an executable on a webserver. My company provides a smart-client management infrastructure that extends this to provide server-push deployment of smart clients to arbitrary groupings of client machines, a peer-based messaging infrastructure that accommodates firewalls and NATs and reduces server load, and full reporting capabilities. My requirement is that If the connection to the central server is available, the application should check for the latest version. If the connection to the central server is not available then it should continue with the same version. The desktop application should not stop if the connection to the central server is not available. I have achieved this functionality by manually making a version file at the client machine and checking if there is any version update available on the central server.
