I think people are throwing out ideas because they can't think of an exact
straightforward solution to the problem.
IMO metadata would be the best way to store it, rather than a simple
constant. But you are right that that doesn't really solve the problem of
how to get it in there to begin with.
I think you're example:
[assembly:BuildTimeStamp("2005-01-25 14:58:00")]
May actually be close to a possible solution. What about a pre build step
or VS.Net macro (or something similar, I haven't used them) that goes in
updates that attribute in the AssemblyInfo.cs?
