The guy you're describing isn't even remotely linked to the DBA job.  He's
what I like to call "a database expert" - a consultant who's been fixing
s%$tty databases for so long, he's in the top 1% of the people in his field.

I'm sorry but 99.8% of DBAs aren't like that.  They're just ordinary people
whose profesional skills lean towards engineering, but who were afraid to
make the jump to developers / architects.

Remember: for each engineer working in automobile design, there are 500
professional drivers, and for each professional driver there are hundreds of
amateurs.  Pretty much the same applies to the chain architects ->
developers -> support engineers.  DBAs are support engineers, unless you
happen to stumble upon an architect who, for one reason or another, has
decided to specialize on the database tier only.

And to the previous poster who claimed A standed for Analyst...

DBA = DataBase Administrator
