Ditch the applet and do your option 2. The signing and usability issues
associated with applets are thereby avoided. As to putting garbage
on the user's computer, it cannot really be avoided, but it can be
ameliorated somewhat by using the /tmp or c:\temp spaces on the system.
To make the application start as soon as possible, the application should
be threaded, one loading data into one of several disk cache files
in the /tmp and another reading the next available buffer.
