Why does this need to be hidden? An invisible checkbox sounds awful. It would be better to put the setting somewhere else or only add the item to the menu for certain users. Depending on the reason for hiding the setting, it could be put in an advanced settings dialog, or users could turn on advanced menus (which show more menu items), etc.
