Well thank you both for letting me know how behind we are!!!
It's been a while since I traveled on your side of the
Atlantic.  I recently took a trip into Baja Mexico, and had
to use *cash*.  For 9 weeks, I didn't use my credit card
once!!!  They don't use checks there, either.  They stand in
line at the bank to get cash, then stand in line to pay
their phone bills.  At least I could get Peso's from ATM's
in (their version of) big cities.  It was a step back in
time for me, a sabbatical, a chance to turn my techie brain
off and go slow.  I didn't know that you felt that way when
you came here.  Good to know.  Perhaps there's hope for us
-- we keep figuring out how to process checks faster rather
than replacing them.  At some point, you can't get a horse
to gallop faster, and you have to learn to fly.....
