Ok, I've figured it out, not too sure that this will actually cost the appropriate 1 unit as opposed to 400, but it works, the call to reportDefinitionValidationService.mutate(..) returns null if it works and throws an exception if it doesnt.
Probably could use some documentation about using this feature.
