Michael I confess I'm not well versed in 20/21st century music. I like lots of Prokoviev and some Stravinsky but I guess they seem quite ancient now for someone who knows contemporary music. I have occasionally heard bits of Arvo Pdrt that I liked but I know very little about his music.
Oddly enough I keep wanting to go back in time not forwards. I am currently getting to know figures like Tallis, Josquin, Ockeghem and various figures of that period. The pity is that, unlike visual art, music peters out at a certain point. It would be very interesting to know what ancient Egyptian music was like. Or the music of pre-classical Greece. At least we have some of the music of other cultures like Africa or China. Though it distresses me to find that a lot of what we are given under this sort of heading now is watered down, westernized and often with a modern beat added. Homogenised music. A bit like jazz... It is to jazz as Rembrandt is to some amateur daubing. Can you recommend any XXth or XXIst century composers or compositions that compare to Mozart? I am not well versed in that repertoire. Thank you. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Michael Brady [EMAIL PROTECTED]
