They may well have been scandalized by what did go up on the Parthenon since
there was nothing quite like it Greek temples before or since.

There seems to be an irrepressible impulse to continue the tradition of Edith
Hamilton -- and tell us all about the Greek way  based on our favorite
artifacts from the period.

But I think we should allow that these artifacts might tell us much more about
the imaginations of a few extraordinary individuals and then, perhaps, the
small, elite  society of men who got together in drinking parties to talk
about what they did.
