I agree that one can't do science by metaphor but, as noted here by Cheerskep, 
metaphors help to elucidate information.  And of course, I love metaphors 
simply because they often overstep the presumed limits of analogy and lead to 
new thoughts, however unruly and excessive.

I think the door reference was an analogy because it was conditioned by the 
thing it is compared to, being larger or smaller as "appreciation" was larger 
or smaller. A metaphor could, maybe should, retain equvialence in comparison 
but since it is more about one thing "as if" another and not simply one thing 
"like" another, it can include all the non-comparable attributes of the 
surrogate. Grammarians to the table, please.  Michael?
