Of course, there's no arguing with how someone feels about something -- but
that doesn't mean such statements are worthless. They say something about the
viewer as well as about the viewed.

If only we had some Bouguereau fans on this list to confirm or dispute Boris's
reaction.

My reaction was closer to Mike's -- i.e. it was the sense of drama (not
awareness of the painter's technique) that grabbed me -- and come to think of
it -- doesn't drama usually come in monochrome ? The kind of drama that puts
you on the edge of your seat and makes you feel that a big change is about to
occur -- and it might affect you.

Are political cartoons ever in color ? Would you take their political message
seriously if they were?

But what is in color is feeling --- sensuality -- and that colorful little
counterpane is such a perfect accent to erotic scenes -- indeed, it's the most
explicit part of Mughal erotica with the colorful explosion of cushions on the
mattress.

Desiderio really is an extraordinary figure painter.

He's done this little erotic scene so well -- but I wouldn't be surprised if
he never did another one. (which is one way he's quite different from both
Titian and Bouguereau)
