Do you mean to ask for a photo portrait that I find as expressive as a painted portrait? OK? Are the two media equivalent? No? But I think Alexander Hesler's 1860 campaign photos of Abraham Lincoln as as good or better than any painted portraits of Lincoln. I do think that Karsh's photo of Churchill is as good as G. Sutherland's portrait of Churchill. The portrait of me by James Valerio that hangs in the Chicago Union League Club is as good as his 8x10 transparency photograph from which he made the painting. It helps, I suppose that he's known me for over 40 years, too. For your test, I'd say the Hesler 1960 Lincoln would be a good choice and any painted portrait of Lincoln that you choose. Or the Sutherland/Karsh Churchill. WC
